ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- Augustana College joins a growing list of colleges and universities to make standardized tests optional for admission. That's after its faculty recently gave the go-ahead.

Stacks of applications tell the story at the Rock Island campus. After enrolling a record high freshman class (715), the college is poised to process more than 3,000 applications this year. But this time, students won't need to take the SAT or ACT.

"What's most important to us are students who achieve highly in the classroom rather than those students who perform well only on a four hour exam on a Saturday morning," said W. Kent Barnds, vice president of admissions and enrollment.

Knox College in Galesburg also adopted the test-optional policy. That's after a 20-year study at Bates College, which indicated no performance difference between test-takers and those who did not.
