The weather, for the last week of Northern California's blacktail deer season, was a hunters dream. Wet conditions predicted for the entire week promised quiet woods and would move the deer out of the thick brush. I was excited about our prospects and happy we would be camping in the comfort of a 16x20 foot canvas wall tent with a wood stove.

Hunting partners, Mike Taylor and Dan Hopper and I looked forward to this trip all year. But due to a family illness, Mike had to cancel.

Arriving a day before Dan and the scheduled wet weather, I spent the entire day setting up camp and cutting a load of wood for the stove. It was a warm, pleasant day, relaxing around camp and preparing for a few hard days of hunting.

As the evening light faded, the first drops of rain began. I left the flap of the wall tent open so I could see the darkening woods and sat next to the stove watching my pot of stew start to bubble.
